Will we get to eventually play as a Wookie? Maybe in an expansion?
Will we get to eventually play as a Wookie? Maybe in an expansion?
Unlikely. and for a number of reasons. Namely because the focus of the game is on voice acting, and wookies are known for their grunts and roars, it's unlikely we'll see a playable wookie as a class, if only because they want every class to have a voice.
Secondly, most wookies do not fit in to a certain class. Wookies, as stated by Lucas, are not really Jedi and to find a wookie jedi is extremely rare, and no longer allowed by that regard. At the same time, it's said that a number of classes on either Republic or Empire would really have an acceptable class for them. Because they not force users, the only option would be Smuggler or Trooper, with neither fitting exceedingly well with the lore for the classes.
Lastly, with the history of the Wookies, it's likely they'll continue to be companions, with maybe an option over time to add wookies for other class companions. Think of all the major wookie characters, they are all more or less additional characters to existing main characters. Additional tool to portray existing characters with out being too much on the main characters. This said, it's far MORE likely they'll continue to be companion in the game , and less likely they'll be playable characters in the future.
Though the possibly of an expansion does not rule this out necessarily.
They won't have anything like that at launch and they haven't announced any plans. They have said, however, that if they do implement something like less human races (which leaves open the possibility), it would be as its own class with its own class story and everything. So, yeah, it's possible.
Any races added to the game will have to speak basic, as they don't want a character class speaking alien throughout the entire game.
There are quite a few races that are featured as NPCs but aren't available to players. At launch only certain races are available for your characters. With future expansions it is entirely possible that other races will be come available but that information will be available whenever Bioware announces an expansion
Unfortunately, no. It is very, very unlikely that you will see yourself playing any non-humanoid class in SWTOR. One of the reasons Bioware games has never offered such a myriad of character choices like you see in games like Skyrim is because they want you to be playing someone you can effortlessly relate to--seeing a lizard-man or in our case a Wookie speaking with the same voice as a slender human is not something that they want to allow.

It's quite well established in lore that most wookies are unable to speak basic (they can't form the proper sounds), though a very few have a specific "speech defect" that enables them to pronounce basic well enough to be understood (but not WELL). The lore purists would never let them get away with speaking basic better than Astro, from the Jetsons. :)
