Ok so I read some answers on what is a good class to play for ranger dps. the sorcerer sounds like a good plan what kind of spec would be good for a new player to mmos?

Lightning or madness tree will focus on ranged dps skills. You will cause havoc with a sorcerer. Read here for more info on the Sorcerer http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=702209

Since your first companion is a Tank I would put point into DPS for a little while. Since you new to mmo's play with that then experiment and see what else you like. The SI: Soc is going to have the options for Heal/DPS. The Sorcerer's Skill Tree is set up as Corruption(heals) Lighting(DPS) and Madness(DPS/PVP)

I would personally go with a DPS build that has a little bit of healing on the side - this way you can dish out awesome amounts of damage while healing yourself should things get hairy. :)

personally i would go for madness. i played lightning throughout the beta and was sorely underpowered for quests. in endgame i believe lightning will be good for pure dps but you have very little survivability sadly

You may even want to look at the BH or IA also. I had alot of fun with those too.

IA - try the marksman line. BH - try the mercenary line.
