Focus healing keybindings suggestions?

I am starting to play a IA healer, and want to try out the Focus target healing. I really haven't played a healer in MMOs before, and would like some suggestions on healing using the Focus target/main target mechanism available in SWTOR.

Mike Norton (manorton) from TOR Hangout did a video about using the Focus Target. Although it doesn't go into a lot of detail about strategies for healing with it, it definitely covers the basics:

Okay, this is an awesome video. As a Combat Medic Trooper, I've had no idea if there's an easier way to heal people when switching between targets. Setting one as a focus target and then switching between others, I think it can be used more effectively.

I have tried using the focus frame, but its seems buggy to me. Some times I can cast to the focus target using the modifier key and sometimes its doesn't work and I end up healing myself.

Has anyone else experienced problems with the game losing your focus target?

If your Focus is your companion(maybe all focus targets, havnt testes) during a CS or phase change it is lost
