Or do you start your game out with one?
You'll get your ship by following the main quest. Normaly, it's around level 15+. I got mine at level 18. You can change a few stuff on your ship by making mission, just like you can custom weapons.
You get your ship at roughly level 16-18 (varies based on how intently you follow your character quests).
And i haven't seen much modding in the way of exterior style or anything like that, however there are quite a few slots for upgrades, much like your characters gear set, your ship has one in your character tab. A few examples are you can upgrade your shields, missile capacity, health, etc.
Interior i heard there are a few modification options to make it more personalized, however i couldn't figure out how this was done, but i know if you get the collectors edition you get a few goodies that you can put around your ship (i'd imagine there would also be purchasable goodies at some point)
It's not level dependent, it depends on when you finish your origin world I believe! So around level 10 I would assume...
I have read that you must complete your class story line all thru your capital city. If you don't you won't be able to travel universe to other planets. So my best guess would be 15-20 level depending on which side quests you do as well.
Your starship is acquired when you complete part of your class mission. You can recieve it at virtually any level as long as you can complete the mission given to you.
Its around level 15. You get it when you finish a certain class mission but its around then.
You do get to customize it somewhat using reward from space combat missions and exchanging tokens for star ship items I believe.
When you finish the first "Chapter" of your class story—so usually around the level 16-17 mark, which ties in with being able to move to the next planet.
You get your ship around lvl 15 . The space battles are Arcade style so I don't see any PvP there. You use your ship as your base (house) where you can chat with your companions.
I got my Ship at lvl 17, but if I had concentrated on just my class Quest, I'd say around level 15-16. I was playing BH.
And the first time I looked, there were like 3 Space Missions able to be done. I did not play much after that so I cannot say how many more open up as you level or if they are tied to your class progress, but you have a couple of choices as soon as you get your ship.
I got mine at 18. Would be around 16 but i play pvp a lot so it's extra xp.
I got mine at 17, but a lot of it depends on how many side quests and when you did the specific part of the story quest.
I played a Sith Inq during the beta weekend and got mine at level 14. (I got sprint at the same time)
As a BH I got mine at lvl 15 after changing focus to just do the class quests till I got the ship. A friend of mine playing SI got his at 14.
When you get your ship is dependent on the last of your class quests on your capitol planet. The level will vary, although I know that I'd seen it as early as 15 (skipped a few secondary/side quests), and as late as 18 (did almost every side quest available).
As far as whether or not you get to customize it, not exactly. You can upgrade components and whatnot, but that's pretty much just used for the Space Combat minigame. I vaguely remember hearing that 'customization' (in the respect that one might customize player housing) for ships was on the Wall of Crazy, and that it would not be in at launch, but it's something they might wanna add after release at some point.
