What gifts are good to the various companions?

I noticed that some of the companion gifts the companion just scoffed at and their affection for me did not increase. Is there a guide or any guideline for determining if the gift will affect the companions affection?

I had Khem Val and 2V-R8; and tried to give them gifts that seemed to fit better to their function (fighting type items to Khem and droid part type stuff to 2V) but still they would scoff at some of the items?

I'm not sure if the rank of the items wasn't high enough? Is there a range-to-rank guideline? maybe a level-to-rank?

Check your codex it tells you what they like and dislike. If that doesn't help, common sense hasn't failed me yet for guessing as to what that companion might like/dislike.

oooo codex... great answer! I didn't even look at it, even though I saw it adding things all the time. (My common sense tend to fail me quite often ;-P lol)

The best way is to get to know your companion and then you should figure out what they like and not. Of course some are quite easy to guess - robots would generally like Technology, soldiers fancy new Weapons and Military Gear, hunter will be happy with new Trophy etc. The other way is old trial and error. Since you can have up to 5 companions and there are 10 types of gifts, I would suggest noting down who likes what. You may also want to know that companions can react in four ways: indifferent, like, favourite and love.

As for robot from you ship I don't think you can increase his affection as I tried plenty of gift types on him and none worked.

Largely true, but not always. Oddly enough, Elara Dorne dislikes weapons.
